Mum was passionate about the jobs that she did and the hobbies that she had.
Several years after I became a teacher she became a governor of a local primary school. In her usual style she became the chair of governors a few years later. We didn't always agree on our views but our interest in education did lead to some lively debates - and sometimes my experience did get her to change her opinion!
In the two years before her death she also became instrumental in setting up a new brance of NADFAS (National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts Society - or something like that!) She was on the committee as well as attending the meetings she got to entertain speakers and be involved in planning future events - she loved it.
After her death NADFAS proposed a memorial to her - a mosaic in the school where she was chair of governors. I thought it was a super idea, but then heard nothing more - until this week (nearly 3 years after they first told me about it!) It is still planned and should be finished later this year, they've asked me to unveil it and say a few words. It should be late enough in the year that Whatshername is home.
Not only that but the idea of the mosiac has prompted a scheme to put artists and musicians into local schools - Mum would thoroughly approve and I think that she'd be chuffed that her mosaic started the ball rolling!
