THE TIME HAS COME . . .

. . . to say Goodnight,
To say sleep tight, 'til the morning light,
The time has come to say Goodnight
It's the end of a lovely day!

We've had so much fun today,
Tomorrow's just a dream away,
And now it's time to say Goodnight
At the end of a lovely day!

Goodnight!

This is the song that is sung at the end of CBeeb*ies every night.

The presenter Chris sings it, I sing it too and at the end Alice joins in with 'Goodnight' and then says 'Nigh-night Beebies' when the screen goes green with their end of transmission message. It's part of our bedtime routine. Tonight Alice surprised me and sang nearly every word, so special, tuneless but wonderful to hear.

ACTIVITIES WITH ALICE

Yesterday we returned to the music group that we tried several times in September. It was still a little babyish for Alice but it's a nice group of Mums and Grannies so we'll probably keep going but not every week.

Alice's behaviour in these type of groups is getting more challenging - she insists on getting up and wandering. Last week in T T they asked her to sit down - I don't have a problem with that, but they are more tolerant of other children - notably those children are around the same age or older but smaller than Alice. Although I enjoy the group I am getting rather fed up with this and other attitudes from the pair that host it - they always pick the same few children to participate and the quality of their preparation is variable. I hope that venting here will alleviate my negative feelings but I'm ready to quit - the problem is that there just aren't that many groups round here and this is the only activity like this that we do these days.

Alice is going to start at a local childcare nursery soon. Just one morning a week. I'm trying to break her in slowly. It'll be the first time that she's been away from me outside our home. It'll also be the first time that she's been in a group childcare setting. I've chosen this nursery as eventually it should offer me more options for childcare than a playgroup would. I'm sure I'll be more apprehensive than Alice. The plan is to start with the morning session and when she's settled to increase her time to include lunch and then the afternoon as well. I've chosen a day when a very good friend of hers is also in and in January another friend will also be there on Alice's morning.

SHE SPEAKS!

. . . but not to me!!

Apparently (for T and her mum), Alice will say, "Up!" But I've never heard it and Alice is definitely not a performing animal and will never do things on command, but will perform for the gallery if SHE feels like it! After being told by T's Mum that Alice said it to her too, I've spent the rest of the afternoon trying to get her to demand 'Up', to no avail.

Our bedtime routine is secure now, sometimes she bathes, sometimes not, but babygrow is always followed by bottle, bag and bed. When we're at home the bottle is always in the rocking chair in her room, she takes 4-5 oz lying in my right arm, her body across mine and then the remains of the bottle sitting up on my tummy facing me. All of the bottle happens whilst listening to a Lullaby CD (thanks E and family) and then we listen to a track or 2 more when she's finished drinking, while we rock. Over the last 2 weeks or so (while home) I've noticed that the final tracks (whatever's playing but the music after the bottle) I'm actually getting very physical hugs, initiated by Alice, 1 or 2 tracks is becoming 3 or 4 while I revel in my daughter's love and let her know just how much it is reciprocated. My heart swelled even more tonight when she said (when prompted but without being upset), "Mum, mum, mum!" over and over again.

The very best ending to a very stressful day.

NO JINGLES

We usually go to a music class on a Thursday morning. Alice loves music and she's getting used to the routine of our weekly music class. It's great to watch her progress - recently she's been prepared to crawl away from me (though it takes 15 - 20 minutes for her to relax into the class), she'll go to the box in the centre of the circle to 'get' an instrument, streamer or cuddly, occasionally she'll actually bring 'it' back - usually only if it's a cuddly!

Those of you who listened to the R4 prog will know that I'm not a great singer (understatement!) Even if Alice were 100% tomorrow morning we still wouldn't be going - I don't think they'd appreciate my newest singing voice.

Frustrated by being in the house? A little, more so as I haven't had a chance to actually use the B'Bee yet!

TOO MUCH BLOGGING?

Can there be too many photos of Alice? Besides, I try to get one proper chore done each evening after Alice is in bed. Tonight's job was to make a chilli - 1 chilli is now cooking in the oven, all 8 pints of it! I love these photos, the second one shows her newest top teeth, she's very proud of them, me too!!

QUIETER DAY AT HOME

N came to visit, as usual Alice had great fun!

We had a breakthrough last night - the orphanage 'routine' said bed at 8.30pm and then wake for a bottle at 10.30pm, when we tried this in China Alice was irate and would not touch the milk. I tried again last night and Alice drank the whole bottle! Success!! Then she slept until 8am, fab!!

I tried keeping her up a little later tonight, tried feeding the bedtime bottle at 7 instead of 6.30, no good, screaming with tears but no drinking. I'll keep to earlier bedtime for now.

Hoping for another lie-in tomorrow!
