Last autumn it was clear the windows need replacing - they're now 16 years old, soft wood, single glazed and rotting.
So start asking builder for a quote, he comes and measures up. January 06 I start chasing for a quote, February they stop answering the phone and several weeks later I discover that they've gone bust. In March Michael (builder who converted the barn and has just gone bust) brings his son over (separate firm) to quote. April I continue to chase 2nd firm to get quote. Later in the month I get the shocking news that Michael's died. Shortly after this I discover I new firm that have many of Michael's old craftsmen working for them, when I ring them I recognise the Canadian accent of M's old secretary - this sounds good, they're enthusiastic, this might work.
Then plans go on hold - might move!! After second change of plans (in July) I get the builders going again. I have been chasing them for a quote and then a start date since August.
I've been clear with them from the start - it needs to be done before Christmas as I'm off work.
Well, I finally got an answer - January 15th - what a surprise. Arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Now if they overrun it might clash with travel plans.
The mistake is to believe that life is supposed to be simple.
