Whilst exploring my new camera I discovered some things that could help me with the old one! Found out how to format the memory card whilst in the camera, tried it and now the camera works.
So waste of time on the new one? No, I was definitely going to buy a new one before I went to China, this way I get a little more time to experiment and learn how to use it (yes, that would have been useful with the last one!) Also - this way (with 2 working cameras) I will be able to go back to my original plans and give the older one to my travel companion.
My confidence in the old camera has been knocked, a lot, but at least it works.
Ooops!
